What is Flucytosine?

Flucytosine is an antifungal medication used to treat severe yeast infections caused by certain types of fungus. It can treat serious fungal infections of the skin, lungs, blood, heart, urinary tract, and central nervous system. Flucytosine is sometimes prescribed with another drug, called amphotericin B. 

Flucytosine belongs to a class of drugs called antifungals that work by interfering with vital cellular processes in the yeast.

Flucytosine slows the growth of Candida, which may infect the heart, lungs, blood, and urinary tract; and Cryptococcus, which infects the lungs, brain (meningitis), and other organs.

Flucytosine is taken as a capsule every six hours. Because nausea and vomiting are so commonly experienced, it may be necessary to take each dose a little bit at a time over a 15-minute period (if more than one capsule is required per dose). Each dose should be taken with an 8-ounce glass of water. Take Flucytosine for the full prescribed length of time, even if you start to feel better.
