This medication is a form of the female sex hormone estrogen. During menopause, estrogen levels in women decrease, leading to hot flashes and other symptoms. This medication works by replacing estrogen that the body would normally make.
This medication comes in the form of a 0.06% transdermal gel. It must be applied only to clean, dry, unbroken skin. You should not apply this medication to skin that is red or irritated. Elestrin is usually applied once daily to the upper arm with the use of a metered-dose pump. Talk to your doctor to find out more about how to go about using this medication and about the dose that is right for you.
Your doctor may decide on your dose based on your current medical condition and your body's response to the medication. This medication should not be applied to your breasts and it should not be used if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor if you have a medical history of heart attacks, strokes, or blood clots before you start taking this medication. Avoid smoking while using Elestrin, as smoking can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. Keep Elestrin out of the reach of children and pets.
Common side effects that may occur while taking Elestrin include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or bloating, breast pain or tenderness, weight changes, vaginal bleeding or spotting, or headaches. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these or other side effects that do not subside.
