Depo-Provera and Depo-Provera CI are brand-name prescription injections with medroxyprogesterone as the active ingredient. Generic medroxyprogesterone injections are manufactured by Nucare, Teva, Sun, and other generic manufacturers and are consistently less expensive than Depo-Provera. However, Depo-Provera is always administered by a healthcare professional at a clinic, office, or hospital. Patients may not have a choice of using brand-name or generic medroxyprogesterone injections.
Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone) is a brand-name intramuscular injection that helps to treat inoperable or metastatic cancer of the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus) or kidney. Metastatic cancers are those that have spread to other parts of the body.
Under the name Depo-Provera CI (for “contraceptive injection”) or Depo Sub-Q Provera 104, Depo-Provera is also used as a women's contraceptive. In addition, Depo-Provera is sometimes used off-label to treat endometriosis or irregular menstrual bleeding. For more information or savings coupons on Depo-Provera CI or Depo Sub-Q Provera, search the SingleCare website or app. The rest of this short article will focus only on Depo-Provera.
Both endometrial cancer and kidney cancer are “provoked” into uncontrolled growth by estrogen. Estrogen also causes the endometrium to grow and thicken and is the hormone responsible for endometriosis, an abnormal growth of endometrial tissue on the outside of the uterus. Medroxyprogesterone injections reduce the amount of estrogen in the body and so help slow the growth of estrogen-sensitive cancers and any endometrial growths on the outside of the uterus.
Depo-Provera is injected by a healthcare professional once every week. The dose may vary.
The most common side effects experienced by patients after a Depo-Provera injection are site reactions, such as irritation, pain, or a lump at the injection site.
Common side effects of Depo-Provera include but are not limited to changes in menstruation, weight gain, bloating, nausea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, feeling tired, sleepiness, breast tenderness, acne, hair loss, joint pain, swelling, fever, and “feeling bad” (malaise).
More serious but less common adverse effects include liver problems, blood clots, and high calcium levels.
Mental and mood changes include depression, nervousness, and euphoria.
Allergic reactions are uncommon but include rashes, hives, or trouble breathing. Immediately consult with your doctor if you show signs of an allergic reaction.
This is not a complete list of side effects. As with any medication, if you have concerns about possible side effects, ask your doctor.
