Xatmep is the only brand-name prescription oral solution with the active ingredient methotrexate. Generic methotrexate oral solution is not supplied at this time.
Xatmep (methotrexate) is a prescription drug prescribed to patients with acute lymphoblastic anemia or with active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) that has not responded to other drugs, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
The active ingredient in Xatmep, methotrexate, is an “antimetabolite,” that is, it prevents cells from carrying out basic functions (metabolism) they need to survive and divide. Xatmep is effective against tumors because it both prevents tumor cells from dividing and kills them.
Polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis is a non-rheumatoid arthritis in children (juvenile) that affects five or more joints in the fingers (polyarticular). It results from the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissues, and the resulting inflammation causes fever, redness, and swelling in the joints. Methotrexate blocks the basic functions of the white blood cells that cause swelling and damage to the joint tissues.
Xatmep is taken as an oral solution once per week for patients who cannot swallow tablets. The oral form of methotrexate is used when low doses are required. The dose will depend on the underlying condition.
Severe side effects of Xatmep depend on the dose and length of treatment, but they include bone marrow suppression (putting the patient at risk of serious or fatal infections), liver damage, anemia, potentially irreversible lung disease, lymphomas, kidney problems, and infertility.
Xatmep is toxic to and will kill fetuses.
Common side effects of Xatmep include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, hair loss, and swelling in the mouth.
Allergic reactions are rare but potentially severe. These include Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, serious and potentially fatal skin reactions to Xatmep. Watch for any signs of an allergic reaction – fever, sore throat, flu symptoms, rash, or blisters – and immediately talk to a doctor if you suspect you're having an allergic reaction.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Please ask your physician if you have any concerns or questions about the possible side effects of Xatmep.
