What is Silver Nitrate?

Silver Nitrate is an applicator stick coated in silver, and it is used to treat wounds and burns on the skin as an anti-infective agent. It can also be used to treat warts and skin tags. This product has antimicrobial properties and can be used in adults and children. Silver Nitrate works by burning infected skin tissue around a wound, which allows the wound to heal.

Silver Nitrate is available in the form of applicator sticks. Dip the tip of the stick into a small amount of sterile or distilled water to activate the silver. Then, roll the tip of the stick over the granulation tissue. Dipping the stick in saline or salt water can deactivate the silver and stop it from working.

Read and follow the instructions provided on the product packaging before you start using this medication. If you are still uncertain about how to use this medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for additional information. Applying Silver Nitrate may be uncomfortable. Your doctor may recommend that you give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen before application to prevent pain or discomfort.

What are the side effects of Silver Nitrate?

Silver Nitrate may cause burning, pain, and irritation around the area of application. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any side effects. Serious side effects are rare.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
