Nitrolingual is used to relieve chest pain (angina) in people that have a certain heart conditions including coronary artery disease. It may also be used before physical activities such as exercise, or sexual activity to assist in preventing chest pain. Angina tends to occur when the heart muscle is not getting enough blood.

Nitrolingual belongs to a class of drugs known as nitrates. Drugs in this class work by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart while reducing its work-load.
