Donepezil is used to help improve mental function in people with Alzheimer's disease. While this drug does not cure the disease, it is thought to improve memory, awareness, and the ability to function effectively. Donepezil belongs to the cholinesterase inhibitors drug class.
Cholinesterase inhibitors (also called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors) are a group of medicines that block the normal breakdown of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is the main neurotransmitter found in the body and has functions in both the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system. For example, acetylcholine is released by motor neurons to activate muscles; acetylcholine also has an important role in arousal, attention, learning, memory, and motivation.
Cholinesterase inhibitors block the action of the enzyme cholinesterase, which is responsible for breaking down acetylcholine. This increases levels of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft (the space between two nerve endings).
It should be noted that Donepezil does not work the same in all people. Some people taking this prescription medication have improved mental function, while others may have unchanged or even worsening mental function. This condition will progress over time, even in people who take donepezil.
Possible side effects of Donepezil can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, muscle pain, sleep problems (insomnia), or feeling tired.
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to the FDA.
