Avycaz (ceftazidime and avibactam) is a brand-name prescription combination drug used to treat certain bacterial infections such as hospital-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, and complicated intra-abdominal infections. Complicated infections are infections that have a higher risk of failure with regular treatment.
Ceftazidime belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporins. This type of drug kills bacteria by interfering with their ability to form or repair their cell walls, which protect the bacteria's contents from the outside environment. As the cell wall loses its integrity, the bacteria's contents begin to spill out and the cell can no longer function. Avibactam protects ceftazidime from being broken down in the body, giving it more time in the body to kill bacteria. Avycaz is usually given every eight hours as a two-hour intravenous infusion. However, the exact dosage will depend on the condition being treated.
While medicines may have side effects, many people experience no or minimal side effects. The most common side effects of Avycaz are temporary injection site reactions such as pain, irritation, redness, and soreness around the area of injection. Other common side effects of Avycaz include nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, and abdominal pain. Mental and mood changes include anxiety. Serious side effects of Avycaz include Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea and seizures.
Avycaz allergies are rare but could be severe. Allergic reactions can include anaphylaxis (an allergic reaction to Avycaz in which the blood pressure drops low enough to become a medical crisis) and severe skin reactions that may require hospitalization. Most Avycaz infusions will take place in a hospital. Patients will be monitored closely during and after the infusion. Still, make sure you tell a physician or nurse if you're experiencing what you believe is an allergic reaction to Avycaz.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or healthcare provider about possible side effects, drug information, and medical advice before taking this medicine.
