What is Amitiza?

Amitiza is a member of the chloride channel activators drug class. This drug should not be mistaken for a laxative or a fiber. Amitiza helps to enhance the body's natural function by increasing fluid in the bowels to help you pass stool. Amitiza works locally in the intestines to regulate the fluid balance so you can avoid constipation. Amitiza does not alter electrolyte concentrations or produce tolerance as is sometimes seen with laxatives.

Amitiza is available in oral capsules and is supplied in 60, 24mcg capsules. Amitiza is generally prescribed to be used twice daily for chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults, constipation caused by opioid pain medication, or for irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).
