What is Hydroxyurea?
Hydroxyurea is a generic prescription drug that is used to treat a certain type of leukemia (chronic myeloid leukemia), head and neck cancers, and melanoma (cancer of pigment-creating cells in the skin, eye, or intestines). It is sometimes used off-label for recurrent or inoperable ovarian cancer.
Hydroxyurea blocks the ability of cancer cells to create DNA, so they eventually die off without producing new cancer cells. In addition, Hydroxyurea prevents cancer cells from repairing DNA damage caused by radiation therapy or chemotherapy, making it less likely for cancer cells to rebound from those therapies.
Hydroxyurea is also used to treat sickle cell anemia, a genetic disorder in which the body makes an irregular form of hemoglobin, the molecule that carries oxygen in the red blood cells. This irregular form of hemoglobin causes red blood cells to become misshapen into a sickle-like shape. These misshapen red blood cells carry less oxygen and block other red blood cells. Low oxygen damages the nerves and organs throughout the body.
